The skills I have learnt during the whole process in both the preliminary task and the one that followed it is a lot seeing as I was a beginner in most of the technologies we had to use.
I was a Photoshop beginner when we started the preliminary task at that time I didn’t experiment very much with the images I used apart from the saturation and hue brightness and darkness getting the right sized pages and airbrushing some imperfections
However in the music magazine task I did all the above but made other improvements and changes to the images I use unless I felt the image was better as the original then I leave it as it is. I used lasso tool, free transform, shapes, different fonts and experimented with colour. I scaled certain images if I felt the look stretched when made bigger or looked squashed when made smaller.
I grew in knowledge during the two units of coursework and can do even better with more practice.
In the preliminary task I had a few ideas of how I was going to go about developing the magazine however because I was inexperienced with some technology I didn’t challenge myself too much. In this first task there wasn’t a lot of equipment that we had. We only had a camera and places where
we choose to take the pictures. I chose to use a painting as a background for the college magazine front cover and a green bush as a background for my contents page. In this task I didn’t do much research on the contents pages of college magazine and did sufficient for the front cover only. Because of the mistakes I made in the preliminary task I tried not to make them on the following task which was the music magazine.
I made sure I got familiar with equipment given to me chose sensible backgrounds. Guided the models as to what I wanted in the image and what to pose like and what not to pose like and these were the creative decisions I made at the start.
I had ideas coming from other front covers, from TV shows like Americas next top model for the styling for the models, music videos etc.
When editing I had to pay attention to anchorage, layout – I taught about this a lot when doing the contents page and double page spread I decide on neat columns of four for the double page spread and all text on one side of the page for contents page, mode of address and the register I was going to use.
My front cover was influenced by particular magazines Blender magazine the issue where Katy Perry was on and nicki minaj issue. These issues had lots of colour which was eye-catching.
I therefore tried to use colour in an effective way on my magazine however more subtle and not too in your face.
For my contents page my influences where Vibe magazines use of V and Icon magazine and the use of the line underneath the text.
I used some props but minimal and this was the decision I made I didn’t want it to take away from the original image.
I drafted ideas for my magazine front cover contents and double page and this was really important and really helpful for the final product that was made. Design drafting in this case is really important.
Postproduction feedback
I got feedback verbally from classmates and few friends and I posted the product on face book to get feedback I felt this would be better and I would get more clear and straight to the point feed back than if I conducted a questionnaire.
Many said that the magazine is very eye-catching trendy and suits their music taste a few felt I should have a few more images on the contents page and a few felt the double page spread should have had more colour I agree with them on the double page spread comment however I think the one image on the contents page is quite strong with the V in bold for Volume when asked which was their favourite it was a mixed answer some said front page others the contents and the rest said the double page spread.
Overall they felt the product as a whole was really good.
